Juliet’s Love Letter to London

Dear London,

Even though I only spent a short 9 days with you, I cannot tell you how much I miss you already and how excited I am to see you next time.

One of the first things I noticed was how chic Londoners dressed. The London uniform is usually a neutral palette with a pop of color. For example, this girl on the Tube was wearing black tee, black jeans, black combat boots, a forest green windbreaker, and a black tote with forest green accents. I was screaming in my head, “SHE IS CHIC AS SHIT!” And then there’s me, trying to wear all the colors of the rainbow on any given day.

Unlike America where people in corporate usually dress in black, corporate people in London usually dress in navy blue. There were some good looking men in navy blue suits, so I’m not complaining.

This letter can’t be all love, so let’s talk about the weather. How… why… sigh. It’s very likely to experience multiple weather conditions in a day, from breezy beautiful Covergirl status to rain, from needing-a-jacket-cause-it’s-cold to help-get-this-jacket-off-it’s-hot. Mother Nature, I just want to ask you kindly to tone it down a bit please!

Some of my favorite London things:

FOOD & DRINKS

I didn’t go to any fancy dining and mainly stuck with food at markets, and I don’t think it is necessary in order to experience the deliciousness London had to offer:

Edu (Flat Iron Square) – who are these people and how do they make their baos so delicious?! The pork belly bao (L) was so fatty and delicious, and was a good complement to the fluffiness of the bao. The octopus bao (R) was so crispy, so fresh! I’m salivating right now.

Scotchtails (Borough Market) – I was reluctant to try this because a Scotch egg is a hard-boiled egg, wrapped in meat, coated in breadcrumbs, and baked or deep-fried. Deep-fried food doesn’t really turn me on. However, I was pleasantly surprised! The meat was perfectly spiced, which made the whole thing more delicious.

Kolkati (Camden Market) – I’ve never had a kati roll before, and it was everything I wanted. The roll dipped in egg, the masala chicken… I feel like all the restaurateurs of London understand the perfect balance of spices and textures. LOVE IT!

The Gentlemen Barista (Southwark) – Their matcha latte is bomb. Enough said.

ACTIVITIES

I enjoyed London markets, in particular Borough Market, Camden Market, and Spitalfields Market – so much food, so much shopping… what else can a simple girl ask for?

Favorite museum I’ve been to in my life so far has to be the Wellcome Collection. It’s free and for people who are interested in figuring out what it means to be human. I didn’t get to see all the exhibits while I was there because I was having a major allergy attack and just wanted to go home.

It was a different feeling, being able to escape the city without leaving the city by ducking into one of London’s many parks. My favorites were Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens, Regent’s Park, and Holland Park. I would explore every building in those parks that’s available to the public because you never know what beauty you will find.

Angel Comedy offers free comedy shows, so I went with Britt and Cian on a Friday night. It was an Angel Comedy Pro Night, which featured 6 comedians. I fell in love with the MC of the night, Masud Milas. Help, I want to be his friend.

I have been to London before when I was in 2nd or 4th grade. All I remember was riding the London Eye, which took forever to go around (30 minutes, to be exact). This time, my friends took me on the Emirates Cable Car, which is less touristy, faster, cheaper, and also had nice views.

MUSIC

I loved all the London street musicians. I understand that art and music are subjective, but compared to the Boston street “musician” I always run into – who is an old man with a musical contraption of everything he could get his hands on (bells, empty tubs, kitchen tongs) – London street musicians could be considered professionals. I miss the London music scene.

Future Itinerary

I already have a couple things on my list the next time I visit London:

  • crazy mini golf courses
  • Hip Hop Karaoke
  • London Cocktail Club, sit at the bar, and get a Brixton Riot cocktail

Au Revoir,
Juliet

Musings, person of interest

Person of Interest: Kenneth

Name: Kenneth V.
Occupation: Photographer and Trader-in-training
Born in: Canada
Grew up in: Bangkok/Toronto
Current Living in: Toronto

How we met
Kenneth and I went to the same international school in Thailand; we were classmates in first and third grade. That was the extent of our relationship. We had mutual friends, but we weren’t close enough to call each other friends. After Kenneth moved to Toronto at the end of seventh grade, we connected through Facebook once it became the popular social media platform to be on (RIP Myspace). He was someone I’d see pop up on my newsfeed once in awhile and it made me wonder what he was up to. However, because we weren’t really friends, I felt weird randomly messaging him. This blog gave me an excuse to catch up on his life and also because since he had not gone the traditional “go to college after high school then find a job” route, I wanted to learn about his experience.

What do you no longer believe?

Prologue by Juliet

Ramit Sethi is a personal finance advisor and entrepreneur, creator of I Will Teach You To Be Rich. I first heard him on the podcast So Money, and then subscribed to his newsletter. In one newsletter, he asked his followers, “What do you no longer believe?” You can check out how he and other people answer his question here, and how Annie and I answer the question below.

Hiking in New England

I want to hike more since we have warmer weather now. I’m also preparing to hike the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in one day at the end of May. Not gonna lie, I’m nervous.

You guys saw the partially failed hike I did last week with Steph, but I’ve done two hikes since then – Check them out after the jump!
